Website Updating
Tip #8
A web publication of Content That Counts

There aren't enough hours in the day?

There are many reasons for not updating websites. Activities you're asked about are the ones that go to the top of your priority list. Perhaps, the job of website updating was added to your already long list of responsibilities. You may feel put upon about the extra assignment. If other more urgent work comes across your desk the website project slips. This is a common story. Too busy. Not enough time.

Is it really about time?

A lack of time is part of the problem. Finding time for enjoyable tasks isn't a problem, so why not find time for updating the website.? Writing for the web is different than other business writing and more demanding. It requires saying more with fewer words. Paring copy down to the fewest words with the most meaning requires multiple edits. It takes more time to write less and most of us aren't practiced in this art.

Do you get a pang of frustration each time you see "update website" on your to-do list? Perhaps saying you don't have time, really means you don't like writing for the web and you don't let it rise to the top of your priority list. It's easier to put off work that seems hard.

Taking time to reorient you way of thinking to write for the web is hard. Even the most skilled writer has to take time to prepare for a new medium. To overcome writer's block try a different approach.

Put website updating on your calendar, like an appointment or conference call. Block out some time. Start with one hour. When the time comes, close the door, turn off the phone and dedicate one hour to your task. Get as much done as you can. Stop at the end of the hour. You can book additional time to complete your work. Often the hardest part of doing something you find difficult is getting started.

The website is an important part of an organization's communications and marketing. If you are responsible for even a small part of the website content, it is your group that benefits from keeping it current. Give yourself the chance to get started. It just may relieve some stress. And, don't we all want less stress?
